Mormon Books

The Mormon books that are believed to be inspired scripture in addition to the Bible by Mormons are the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.  Mormons also use an edition of the Bible that includes changes made by Joseph Smith.

The Book of Mormon

Book of MormonThis Mormon book contains the writings of ancient prophets, just like the Bible.  These prophets lived on the American continent.  It contains records for a thousand years, from 600 B.C. to A.D. 400 and then buried by the last surviving prophet.  An angel visited Joseph Smith and revealed to him the place where this record was buried.  When Joseph was permitted, he went to the place and found a record written on golden plates.  He commenced a translation by the aid of two seer stones buried with the plates.  From the translation, Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830.  It is called the Book of Mormon because the record Joseph Smith translated was an abridgment of all the records of that civilization by a man named Mormon.  The Book of Mormon is a testament of Jesus Christ just like the Bible.  It too, contains the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Book of Mormon is often given more attention by Mormons because it is a belief unique to the Mormon Church.  This Mormon book has been called the keystone of its religion. The Book of Mormon is the tool by which one is converted to the Mormon Church.  Its truth verifies the claim of Joseph Smith as a prophet and the Mormon Church as the kingdom of God on earth.

The Doctrine and Covenants

This Mormon book is divided into 138 sections and two official declarations.  Each section is a revelation given to the prophet of the Mormon Church and recorded for the benefit of all.  Nearly all of the revelations were received by Joseph Smith in the course of establishing the doctrines and practices of the Mormon Church in its early days.  The first section chronologically is from 1823 when the angel appeared to Joseph Smith and told him of the records containing the Book of Mormon.  The latest revelation is the second official declaration, which allowed Blacks to receive the priesthood in the Mormon Church.  The purpose of the Doctrine and Covenants is to set forth the governing of the Church of Jesus Christ and therefore it contains all official Mormon doctrine.  Many of the revelations were received as answers to prayers concerning specific points of doctrine and others were directed to individuals, but the lessons contained in them are applicable to everyone.

The Pearl of Great Price

This Mormon book contains five separate books.  It is a compilation of various writings published in Mormon periodicals concerning the state of mankind and revealing truths unique to Mormonism.  The first book is the Book of Moses.  When Joseph Smith was doing a translation of the Bible he received by revelation, a greatly expanded account of the vision of Moses contained in the book of Genesis.  The account of the Creation and the Fall of Adam are both given in more detail, as well as the generations following Adam, particularly Enoch.  The second book is the Book of Abraham.  It is a translation of Egyptian papyri that were brought to Joseph Smith in 1835.  It contains an account written by Abraham about his life in Egypt as well as a vision that he experienced where he was shown all the works of God, the dwelling place of God, and the Creation of the world.  The third book is Joseph Smith-Matthew, also received by revelation during the Bible translation and is a fuller account of Jesus’ prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem and the second coming.  The fourth book, Joseph Smith-History, was written in 1838 by Joseph Smith and tells of the founding and rise of the Mormon Church.  In it he tells of his vision of God and Jesus Christ and the discovery and translation of the Book of Mormon.  Last are the Articles of Faith.  These are thirteen statements summarizing the core beliefs of Mormonism.  Joseph Smith included these in a letter to a Chicago newspaperman who was inquiring about the Mormons' beliefs.

The Bible

bibleThe Bible is also one of the Mormon books because it is the first witness of Jesus Christ and contains the everlasting gospel.  Mormons use the King James Version of the Bible because Joseph Smith performed a revision of that version of the Bible by revelation, correcting passages that had been altered or omitted over the years of transcription and translation to be more in line with the original intention of the authors of the books of the Bible.  It is because of this that one of the Mormon Articles of Faith states, We believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly.  The Mormon Church prints the King James Bible with Joseph Smith Translation corrections as footnotes.
